Data Quality Audit in One Afternoon

Run a focused 3-hour UAE analytics audit: find duplicate tags, junk conversions, UTM chaos, and offline WhatsApp or call blind spots before scaling.

Data quality audit in one afternoon (before you trust any dashboard)

You do not need a six-week analytics transformation to know if your numbers are lying. You need a ruthless afternoon with Admin access, a phone, and permission to pause bad campaigns. This is the field audit for Dubai SMEs who suspect CPL is fantasy.

When to run this audit

  • Before raising budget
  • After a site redesign or new booking tool
  • When platform ROAS and bank deposits disagree
  • When a new agency “takes over tracking”
  • Quarterly, like changing AC filters

Block 3 hours. Invite whoever owns the website and the ad accounts. No slide deck required — a shared checklist doc is enough.

Hour 0: inventory (30 minutes)

List every property that claims to measure customers:

  • GA4 Measurement ID(s)
  • GTM container(s)
  • Meta Pixel ID(s)
  • TikTok / Snap / LinkedIn tags if present
  • Call tracking provider
  • CRM / WhatsApp tool
  • Any “all-in-one” chatbot scripts

Write who has admin. If the answer is “an ex-freelancer in Karachi,” fix access before you fix tags.

Screenshot baseline

Export last 14 days:

  • Google Ads conversions + cost
  • Meta results + cost
  • GA4 key events by source/medium
  • CRM new leads / booked jobs

You will compare after cleanup.

Hour 1: tag duplication and hygiene

On-site pass

Open the homepage, a key landing page, Arabic page if any, and thank-you page.

Use:

  • Browser devtools Network filter for gtag, G-, fbevents, TTQ
  • GTM Preview
  • Meta Pixel Helper
  • GA4 DebugView

Fail conditions:

  • Two different GA4 IDs
  • Same GA4 ID via hard-coded gtag and GTM
  • Two Meta pixels (unless deliberately multi-brand)
  • Pixel on thank-you only but “PageView” missing on landing (broken funnel)
  • Staging site still sending to production

Does the banner block tags entirely for everyone? Does it fire everything before choice? Either extreme is a data-quality issue. Note current behaviour for the privacy workstream.

Hour 1.5: conversion honesty

Pull 30–50 recent “conversions” from the primary ad platform.

Label each:

  • Spam / bot
  • Wrong service or area
  • Duplicate
  • Contacted, unqualified
  • Qualified
  • Booked / paid

Compute:

true_qualified_rate = qualified / total platform conversions effective_CPA = media_spend / booked (or paid)

If effective CPA is 3–10× the dashboard CPA, you found the fire. Common in high-volume Meta lead forms without area/budget questions.

Event logic checks

  • Does purchase fire on page load of a reusable thank-you URL?
  • Does refresh re-fire lead events?
  • Is transaction_id present for ecommerce?
  • Are test transactions from the developer included?

Hour 2: channel label integrity

In GA4, look at Session source/medium for 28 days:

  • Huge Direct after known paid bursts → missing UTMs
  • Referral from instagram.com / l.facebook.com without paid medium → organic vs paid confusion
  • Multiple casings of the same source
  • Campaign (not set) on paid sessions

Spot-check five live ads’ destination URLs. If three lack UTMs, governance is broken — not “GA4 is wrong.”

Hour 2.5: offline blind spot estimate

Ask sales/ops:

  • What % of booked jobs last month started on phone?
  • On WhatsApp?
  • On walk-in / Maps?

If offline paths are >30% and untracked in ad platforms, your automated bidding is partially blind. Flag call tracking and offline import as P0, not “phase 2.”

Hour 3: report severity and actions

Write a one-page audit note:

FindingSeverityImpactFix ownerDue
Dual GA4 tagsP0Inflated sessions/eventsWeb48h
Lead quality 18%P0Smart bidding optimises junkMarketingthis week
No UTMs on MetaP1Channel reports uselessAgency72h
WhatsApp untrackedP0Under-reported MetaOps + marketing2 weeks

Severity guide:

  • P0: Stop trusting optimisations; fix before scale
  • P1: Reports wrong; fix this sprint
  • P2: Hygiene

Immediate protective actions

  • Pause campaigns optimising to known-junk events
  • Demote secondary conversions
  • Cap budgets until key events are validated
  • Freeze new agency “tracking improvements” without a changelog

Tools for an SME afternoon (keep it light)

  • GA4 + GTM (free)
  • Meta Pixel Helper / Events Manager test
  • Google Tag Assistant
  • Spreadsheet
  • Optional: a session replay tool later — not required for tag audit

You do not need a AED 4,000/month enterprise suite to find double tags.

Illustrative scenario: AED 40k/month “working” account

A multi-location salon group in Dubai and Abu Dhabi believed Meta CPA was AED 55. Afternoon audit found: two pixels, Lead event on Landing PageView for one location microsite, and 40% of leads from outside service areas. After fixes and a geo question on the form, volume dropped 35% and show-rate doubled. Finance finally preferred the “worse” CPA. That is what data quality feels like — fewer vanity wins, better chairs filled.

Recurring mini-audit (45 minutes monthly)

  • DebugView one conversion path
  • Random 10-lead quality sample
  • UTM spot-check on new campaigns
  • Access list review
  • Annotate major site or offer changes

Pair with weekly metrics review so quality is a habit, not a crisis response.

What this audit does not replace

It does replace “we feel like tracking is fine.”

After the afternoon

  1. Fix all P0s
  2. Re-baseline 14 days of metrics (do not compare pre/post naively without annotation)
  3. Document the event dictionary
  4. Only then discuss scale, creative testing, or fancy attribution

Clean data is a competitive advantage in markets where everyone else scales noise. In Dubai’s paid auctions, noise is expensive. Spend the afternoon.
