Apple App Store vs Google Play ASO

How Apple App Store and Google Play ASO differ for UAE apps—keyword fields, indexing, experiments, ratings, and bilingual listings—so you stop copying one store into the other.

Shipping the same English string into both stores is the most expensive shortcut in UAE mobile growth. Apple and Google index different fields, surface different experiments, and attract different device mixes in Dubai. Treat them as sibling channels with shared brand rules—not as a single “store listing” task.

Indexing and metadata: where keywords actually live

Apple App Store

Apple’s strongest textual signals are:

  • App name (title) — character-limited; brand + primary benefit or category term.
  • Subtitle — high-visibility benefit line; strong ranking and conversion role.
  • Keyword field — 100 characters, comma-separated, not publicly visible; do not repeat words already in title/subtitle; no spaces after commas to save characters.
  • In-app purchase display names — minor signal; still keep clean.
  • Long description — mainly conversion and transparency; weak for ranking compared with Play.

Apple also personalizes results and factors downloads, ratings, relevance, and engagement. Exact algorithms are opaque; operational truth is: tight keyword field hygiene + high CVR + healthy ratings.

Google Play

Play indexes more of the visible copy:

  • Title
  • Short description (critical above the fold)
  • Long description (full keyword narrative is legitimate when readable)
  • Developer name (weak but real for brand)

Play’s systems lean on query relevance and user behavior (installs, retention, uninstalls). Keyword stuffing still fails review and user trust—especially visible on bilingual pages.

Practical UAE implication

For a DIFC digital banking app, Apple might win on “salary advance UAE” style head terms via subtitle + keyword field craft, while Play needs those phrases woven into short and long descriptions in both English and Arabic locales without duplicative spam. Build two metadata matrices, not one spreadsheet column labelled “keywords.”

Localization models

Both stores support locale-specific listings. In the UAE you typically maintain at least:

  • English (UAE or English UK/US used carefully—prefer explicit UAE where available)
  • Arabic (UAE)

Arabic is not a font swap. RTL screenshot sets, Arabic UI captures, and native microcopy matter. Google Play’s per-language listing assets and Apple’s localization of screenshots should be full twins, not English screens with a translated caption bar.

iPhone-heavy creative testing often starts on Apple for premium UAE categories; Android creative must still exist—budget for dual production, especially for fintech UI that looks different on Material vs iOS.

Ratings and reviews mechanics

Apple shows ratings in a way that makes recent quality highly persuasive; responding to reviews is expected. Google Play’s rating system and review replies similarly affect trust; Play users may leave longer operational complaints (delivery, KYC delays) that need public ops answers.

Neither store is a place to argue. For GCC users writing in Arabic, reply in Arabic. English reviews get English replies. Mixed reviews that mention “UAE support hours” or “AED fees” are gold for social proof—quote themes in future screenshot captions only if truthful.

Custom Product Pages vs Play experiments

Apple Custom Product Pages (CPPs) let you deep-link paid UA (Meta, Google UAC, Apple Search Ads) to a tailored screenshot set and copy focus—ideal when one campaign sells “zero FX fees” and another sells “family accounts.”

Google Play store listing experiments A/B test graphics and short descriptions for organic and broader traffic. Use them for icon, feature graphic, and first screenshots before you scale Arabic variants.

In the UAE paid mix, CPPs often pay back fastest for iOS fintech and marketplace UA; Play experiments protect Android CVR when you change seasonal creatives for Ramadan or White Friday.

Search Ads and UAC interplay (not pure ASO, but inseparable)

Apple Search Ads bids on the same query space your keyword field targets—poor organic metadata increases paid CPTs. Google App campaigns feed Play listings; a weak short description burns CPI. Align paid query themes with organic metadata monthly.

Decision framework for UAE teams

Prioritize Apple first when: premium ARPU, fintech/wealth, high iOS share in your analytics, brand campaigns on Instagram/TikTok driving iPhone traffic.

Prioritize Play first when: mass delivery, blue-collar and value segments, broader Android share in your category analytics, heavier Google UAC spend.

Always do both before scale when: national consumer brand ambitions, bilingual mass market, or category leaders already dual-optimized.

Common dual-store mistakes

  • Pasting Apple’s keyword field list into Play’s description as comma soup.
  • Localizing text but not screenshots.
  • Testing only English while Arabic CVR quietly lags.
  • Shipping a Ramadan event on one store only.
  • Ignoring Play feature graphic—often the browse and ad surface people see first.

Operating checklist

  • Separate EN/AR metadata docs per store
  • Keyword field character budget used deliberately on Apple
  • Play short description rewritten, not truncated long description
  • Feature graphic + icon contrast checked on small Android devices
  • CPP / listing experiment backlog tied to UA angles
  • Review reply SLAs in both languages
  • Version notes human and localized (users read them during trust hesitations)

Master both store logics, then deepen keywords and copy in the dedicated guides. Platform fluency is what separates “we published an app” from “we run a storefront.”
