Track ASO KPIs: Impressions, CVR, Rank
Track ASO KPIs for UAE apps: impressions, product-page CVR, rank, and quality metrics from App Store Connect, Play Console, and MMPs—without vanity dashboards or invented benchmarks.
If you cannot see impressions, conversion, and rank by locale, you are decorating the store blind. UAE teams need a bilingual, dual-store scorecard that separates diagnosis (discovery vs conversion vs retention) so you stop “fixing keywords” when the real leak is screenshot CVR—or the reverse.
The core funnel
Impressions → Product page views → Installs → Activated users (app-open / signup / first value) → Retained users.
ASO owns the first three heavily; product owns activation. Growth owns the joins via MMP.
Definitions to standardize
- Impression: store search/browse unit as defined in each console (they differ—don’t mash raw numbers without labels).
- Product page conversion rate: installs ÷ product page views (primary CVR).
- Impression-to-install: useful but confounds rank position and CVR.
- Rank: position for a tracked query in a locale/device—directional, tool-dependent.
Sources of truth
| Data | Source |
|---|---|
| Apple funnel | App Store Connect Analytics |
| Play funnel | Play Console store performance |
| Ranks / competitors | AppTweak, data.ai, Sensor Tower, etc. |
| Post-install quality | AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch, or first-party |
| Creatives tests | Play experiments / CPP reporting |
| Reviews | Consoles + shared inbox tags |
Never trust a single third-party volume number as accounting truth. Use tools for relative movement; use consoles for decisions on your app.
Scorecard blueprint (weekly)
- EN iOS CVR and AR iOS CVR (if available splits)
- EN Android CVR and AR Android CVR
- Search vs Browse install mix
- Top 20 keyword ranks EN + AR (fixed list—no cherry-picking movers only)
- Organic install share vs paid
- Rating (recent) and review volume
- Day-1 / Day-7 retention for organic cohort
- Notable listing changes log (so you can attribute)
Diagnostic matrix
| Symptom | Likely layer | First moves |
|---|---|---|
| Impressions down, CVR flat | Discovery / rank / seasonality | Keyword & competitors |
| Impressions up, CVR down | Relevance or creative mismatch | Screenshots, subtitle |
| CVR up, retention down | Wrong traffic or onboarding | Query quality, activation |
| Brand rank weak | ASA defense / awareness | Brand ads + reputation |
| Category rank stuck | Authority & CVR flywheel | Reviews, differentiation |
UAE-specific tracking notes
- Always specify country = UAE in tools; global ranks mislead.
- Track Arabic queries even if volume looks smaller—quality can be higher for local banking and commerce.
- Salary week and Ramadan change baselines; annotate the calendar on charts.
- iOS/Android mix shifts by category—segment before declaring “ASO worked.”
How not to lie with ranks
- Fixed keyword basket reviewed monthly, not a vanity list of #1s.
- Same device and location assumptions in tools.
- Report ranges or weekly medians if daily rank is noisy.
- Pair rank with impressions from consoles when possible.
Experiment analytics
For each listing change, note ship timestamp, store, locale, hypothesis, and result window (usually 7–14 days depending on traffic). Avoid stacking changes. Connect CPP IDs and Play experiment IDs to MMP campaigns.
Cadence
- Daily: crash / outage watch during peaks; broken deep links.
- Weekly: full scorecard, 30–45 minutes.
- Monthly: keyword basket refresh, competitive rank snapshot, budget asks.
- Quarterly: strategy reset against category leaders.
Tooling budget mindset (AED)
Consoles are free and mandatory. Third-party ASO platforms vary widely by seats—many serious UAE apps land in a few hundred to a few thousand dirhams monthly. Buy depth when you have traffic worth optimizing; early stage can start console-only plus manual autocomplete research.
Checklist to instrument this month
- Console access for marketing + data
- Fixed EN/AR keyword lists in a tracker
- Weekly sheet or Looker/Data studio board
- Change log
- Organic cohort retention dashboard
- Owner named
Measurement turns ASO from art arguments into operations. When the funnel is visible, every other guide in this category becomes actionable.
Building the weekly dashboard
Whether Sheets, Looker Studio, or Notion, the weekly view should fit one screen:
- Sparklines for CVR by store (4–8 weeks)
- Table of keyword ranks with week-over-week delta
- Organic vs paid install stacked bar
- Rating recent average
- Annotations for listing changes and outages
If the dashboard needs a meeting to explain, simplify. The point is decisions: ship creative, fix relevance, or defend brand.
Annotation culture
Every metadata or screenshot ship gets a dated annotation. Without annotations, teams invent causal stories. With them, you can say “CVR lifted after fee-table frame” with a straight face—or discover it did not and roll back.
Organic quality cohorts
Create MMP or analytics cohorts: organic_ios_uae, organic_android_uae, optionally by campaign none. Watch activation and D7. If ASO “wins” installs that never activate, you bought support costs. Report quality next to quantity in the same email to leadership.
Competitive rank panels
Track 5–10 competitor ranks on shared head terms monthly. You are not only moving absolutely; you are moving relative to a set. When everyone loses rank on a term, query interest may have shifted—not only your metadata failed.
Alerting without noise
Alert on: sudden CVR drops > material threshold week-over-week, rating freefall, event deep-link errors, and console outages. Do not alert on daily rank jitter for non-brand terms. Noise trains teams to ignore monitors.
Skills on the team
Someone must understand both consoles deeply. Rotate training so ASO is not a single point of failure. Document metric definitions in a one-pager linked from the dashboard header.
