Google Shopping and Merchant Center (UAE)
UAE Google Shopping via Merchant Center: AED pricing, feed hygiene, shipping truth, GTIN discipline, and product ads that stay approved through sale seasons.
Shopping is a feed business first, an ads business second
If your Merchant Center is messy, Performance Max and Shopping will not “find winners” — they will auction ugly data. In the UAE, that means AED prices that match the site, shipping promises people believe, stock that is real, and titles written for how residents actually search (brand + product type + key attribute), not for how a European feed template was built five years ago.
This guide is for ecommerce and DTC brands selling into the UAE (and often shipping GCC-wide) who want product ads that convert, not a dashboard full of disapprovals during Dubai Shopping Festival.
What must be true before you buy traffic
Before campaign structure debates:
- Checkout works on mobile with guest checkout, local payments (cards, Apple Pay where live, Tabby/Tamara if you truly offer them), and clear COD rules if used.
- Shipping and returns are written in plain language on PDP and cart — not buried in a PDF.
- Tracking captures purchase value in AED correctly (GA4 + Google Ads conversion).
- Brand and domain verified in Merchant Center; free-zone companies still need consistent legal/trade name handling.
- Customer service can answer WhatsApp about “where is my order?” — ads amplify support load.
If any of those are broken, fix conversion and ops first. Cheap clicks into a broken cart are a tax, not growth.
Merchant Center foundation (UAE operators)
- Business information, return policy URL, shipping policy URL that load fast on mobile.
- Shipping services that match reality: Dubai same-day / next-day vs Northern Emirates vs Abu Dhabi timelines — do not invent “1-day UAE-wide” if warehouses cannot.
- Tax and pricing: display inclusive pricing the way your store shows it; mismatches cause disapprovals and distrust.
- Diagnostics and account issues: check daily in the first two weeks after launch or feed changes.
- Users and access: marketing agency access without giving away the only admin login to a freelancer’s personal Gmail.
Illustrative scenario: a Business Bay fashion DTC with accurate AED on site but sale_price still showing yesterday’s DSF markdown in the feed will burn ROAS and customer trust in the same afternoon.
Feed fields that actually move performance
Titles: lead with brand + product type + critical attribute (size, colour, material, “for oily skin,” “queen bed”). Arabic storefronts need language-consistent titles; do not paste broken machine translation into the feed.
Descriptions: scannable benefits and specs; reserve keyword stuffing for nowhere — it does not help.
Price & sale_price: must match landing page to the fils. Flash sales need same-day feed updates.
Availability: in_stock only when you can ship. Over-selling during Ramadan campaigns creates refunds and chargebacks.
Images: white or clean lifestyle on primary; additional images for detail. No heavy watermarks or “WhatsApp for price.”
GTIN / brand / condition: submit GTINs when they exist; for private label without GTINs, follow Google’s current requirements carefully rather than inventing numbers (invented GTINs are a classic way to get hammered).
Custom labels: margin band, bestseller, seasonal, clearance — so you can bid differently on high-margin SKUs vs traffic bait.
Campaign choices: Shopping vs PMax vs both
| Approach | When it fits | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Shopping (where available/structure allows) | Control, query visibility culture | Less “set and forget” |
| Performance Max with feed | Scale + creative assets | Black-box; needs strong feed + negatives strategy |
| Brand vs non-brand thinking via labels | Protect brand queries | Requires reporting discipline |
| Remarketing + customer match | Repeat purchase UAE lists | Consent and list quality |
Many UAE SMEs start with PMax because the UI pushes it — that only works if the feed is excellent and you review search category / asset reports weekly. If PMax spends on junk queries, fix the feed, brand exclusions where appropriate, and landing experience before blaming “the algorithm.”
UAE operational specifics (shipping, COD, free zones)
- Warehouse location honesty: “Ships from Dubai” when true is a conversion asset; lying is a refund machine.
- COD: if enabled, reflect any COD fees in policies; high COD refusal rates destroy economics even if ads look profitable on first purchase.
- BNPL (Tabby/Tamara): only show in creative and PDP if checkout truly offers them for that SKU and cart size.
- Cross-border / free-zone sellers: customs, delivery times, and “who is the merchant of record” affect trust — make it obvious.
- Bilingual: if AR store exists, ensure feed language and landing language align; mismatched language is a silent conversion killer.
- WhatsApp commerce hybrids: if half your sales close on WhatsApp after a product click, import offline conversions or you will under-invest in winners.
Title formulas, supplemental feeds, and sale-season QA
Title formulas that shop well in the UAE often look like: {Brand} {Product Type} {Key Attribute} {Size/Colour} — for example, a skincare private label might use “Brand Name Vitamin C Serum 30ml — Brightening.” Avoid ALL CAPS and promotional spam in titles (“BEST PRICE DSF!!!”). Put promotions in sale_price and merchant promotions tools where appropriate, not in keyword-stuffed titles.
Supplemental feeds and feed rules are how small teams stay sane: fix titles in bulk, map custom labels, correct Google product categories, and override bad automation from your Shopify/Salla/Zid connector. If your connector rewrites prices overnight, you need an alert — not a quarterly audit.
Before every big sale (DSF, National Day, Ramadan peaks, end-of-season):
- Freeze SKU list for heroes; ensure stock depth.
- Validate sale_price vs site on 20 random PDPs including Arabic URLs if used.
- Confirm shipping cut-offs published on site match Merchant Center.
- Check image quality on bestsellers (no out-of-stock lifestyle shots of colours you no longer hold).
- Brief customer support: expected delivery language must match ads.
Finance one-pager before raising budget: contribution margin after shipping, COD failure rate, expected returns, and break-even ROAS. If finance cannot state break-even ROAS in AED, marketing should not “scale.”
Diagnostics you should live in
Merchant Center: item disapprovals, price mismatch, crawl issues, shipping coverage. Google Ads: product-level ROAS/margin, impression share on bestsellers, waste on zero-converting SKUs. Site: add-to-cart and checkout completion by device.
Kill or fix SKUs with impressions and no carts before scaling budget. Raising spend on a broken PDP is not a growth strategy.
Diagnostic table: disapproval and ROAS pain
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Price mismatch flags | Feed lag vs site sale | Same-day feed + alerts |
| Low CTR | Weak images/titles | Title formula + image QA |
| CTR OK, no purchases | Shipping/payment friction | Checkout fixes |
| Spend on junk queries | PMax unconstrained | Labels, brand rules, negatives culture |
| High refunds after ads | Over-promise delivery | Shipping truth + stock hygiene |
14-day launch (or relaunch) plan
Days 1–2: Audit top 50 SKUs by revenue: title, image, price, stock, GTIN. Fix the money makers first.
Days 3–4: Align shipping services and policy pages with warehouse reality. Verify domain and payments on mobile.
Days 5–6: Rebuild custom labels (margin, hero, seasonal). Connect conversion tracking in AED; test a real order.
Days 7–10: Launch or relaunch Shopping/PMax with modest budget. Daily Merchant Center check. Pause only broken products, not the whole account on day two.
Days 11–14: Product-level review. Cut zero-converters with spend. Improve titles/images on near-winners. Document a pre-sale feed QA checklist for DSF/National Day/Ramadan peaks.
Where this guidance bends
Shopping will not save a brand with weak product-market fit or non-competitive pricing after shipping. Free-zone “dropship aesthetics” with 12-day delivery lose to local stock even with prettier ads. Google policies and UI labels change — treat this as an operating system, not a one-time setup. Never invent performance case studies; measure your own contribution margin after returns and COD failures.
