Set Up a Google Ads Account the Right Way
Set up Google Ads for UAE teams correctly: AED billing, Gulf Standard timezone, WhatsApp and call tracking, plus clean structure before spend.
A messy Google Ads account costs more than a slow start. UAE SMEs often burn two weeks of budget fixing timezone mistakes, untracked WhatsApp clicks, and “recommended” campaigns Google auto-enabled. This is the clean build sequence — do it once.
Before you touch the interface
Write four lines on paper:
- Who you serve (e.g. villa owners in Arabian Ranches + Marina apartments)
- What they search (3–10 money phrases, not 200 junk terms)
- What counts as a win (booked visit, qualified WhatsApp, paid deposit)
- Where you will never go (Ajman if you don’t cover it; “jobs”; “salary”)
If those four lines are fuzzy, the account will be fuzzy. Dubai teams move fast; fuzzy strategy becomes expensive automation.
Step 1 — Create the account like an operator, not a tourist
- Use a business Google account your team can access (not a personal Gmail that leaves with an intern)
- Link Google Analytics 4 and Google Business Profile where relevant
- Set currency to AED and timezone to Gulf Standard Time (UTC+4) — wrong timezone ruins dayparting and reports forever
- Confirm billing is ready (card or invoice setup) so campaigns don’t die mid-test
MCC or single account?
- One brand, one market: single account is fine
- Agency / multi-brand / multi-country: Google Ads Manager (MCC) from day one
Don’t create three ad-hoc accounts “to test” — you’ll never consolidate learning cleanly. Also decide admin ownership: founder email vs shared marketing inbox. Access loss is a real UAE ops failure mode.
Step 2 — Conversion tracking before campaigns
Create conversion actions in this priority order for UAE lead gen:
- Form submit (thank-you page or event)
- Click-to-call from ads / site
- WhatsApp click (button or wa.me link)
- Qualified offline conversion (optional later via CRM import)
Tag install checklist
- Google tag on all pages (or via GTM)
- Conversion linker / enhanced conversions where possible
- Test with Tag Assistant and a real phone/WhatsApp click from a non-internal device
- Exclude internal IPs (office, home office, agency)
Map each conversion to a business meaning. A WhatsApp click is not a booked kitchen install. If sales qualify leads in HubSpot or a spreadsheet, plan offline conversion import within 30 days so smart bidding can graduate from soft signals to hard ones.
Don’t do this: launch ads with only “website visits” as a conversion. Smart bidding will chase cheap curiosity.
Step 3 — Account-level settings that matter
Turn on only what you understand:
- Auto-apply recommendations: off or severely restricted. Many “improvements” expand match types and budgets you didn’t approve.
- Data exclusions / customer data: configure if you upload offline conversions later.
- Audience signals: fine later; not required for a clean Search launch.
Link Merchant Center only if you sell products. Don’t connect empty shells. Verify payment profile country and tax settings so invoices match how your UAE entity actually books spend.
Step 4 — Campaign architecture (first version)
For a Dubai service business, start simple:
Campaign: Search | Dubai | Core Services | AED daily X
Ad group: Service A — exact/phrase cluster
Ad group: Service B — exact/phrase cluster
Ad group: Emergency — exact/phrase cluster
Campaign: Search | Brand | UAE
Name campaigns so a stranger can audit them at 11pm:
[Search] [Dubai] [AC Repair] [tCPA later] [AED150d]
Not: Campaign #3 final FINAL2.
Geo setup that matches reality
- Target presence in locations (people in or regularly in), not “interested in” for local services
- Start with serviceable neighbourhoods / emirates, not “United Arab Emirates + interested users worldwide”
- Radius around Business Bay can work; overlapping radii without negatives can double-serve the same people
For multi-emirate coverage (Dubai + Sharjah), split campaigns if logistics, pricing, or language differ. One blob “UAE” campaign hides which emirate actually converts.
Step 5 — Keywords and negatives on day one
Seed negatives at campaign level:
- jobs, career, salary, vacancy
- free, DIY, how to, course, pdf
- cities you don’t serve (Abu Dhabi, Sharjah — if true)
- competitor brand terms you won’t pay for (unless intentional)
Match types: start phrase + exact on money terms. Broad match only after conversion volume and a mature negative list — and only with smart bidding you trust. Pull first negatives from your own sales objections: “too expensive”, “DIY”, “warranty only”, “spare parts only”.
Step 6 — Ads and assets (not an afterthought)
Each ad group needs:
- RSA with pin sparingly (over-pinning kills learning)
- Headlines that include service + geo + proof (“Same-Day AC Repair | Marina & JLT | 4.8★”)
- Descriptions with CTA (Call now / WhatsApp for quote / Book online)
- Assets: sitelinks, callouts, structured snippets, call, location, price if honest
Bilingual: if you run Arabic queries, build Arabic ads properly — don’t mirror English character-for-character. Include sitelinks to pricing, areas served, and WhatsApp so mobile users skip the homepage maze.
Step 7 — Landing page gate
Do not go live until:
- Mobile load is acceptable on UAE 4G
- Primary CTA matches the ad (WhatsApp vs call vs form)
- Trust signals visible (license, reviews, service areas, AED pricing bands if you show them)
- Thank-you / event fires on success
Ads to homepage = leaky bucket. If your offer is “same-day in Marina”, the page must say that above the fold — not a corporate slideshow from 2019.
Step 8 — Launch protocol (first 72 hours)
- Start on manual CPC or Maximize conversions with a conservative budget only if tracking is verified
- Cap daily budget so a broken tag can’t empty the month
- Check Search terms every day for the first week
- Pause pure junk queries; add negatives; don’t rewrite the whole account daily
Illustrative starter: AED 100–200/day on a tight service set can teach faster than AED 30/day across twenty ad groups. Thin data produces panic optimisations.
Setup mistakes that haunt you for months
- Enabling every Google “optimisation” on create
- Sharing one conversion action across unrelated businesses
- Using personal credit cards with no shared access
- Skipping call/WhatsApp tracking because “we’ll know from the phone”
- Changing bidding, keywords, and landing pages on the same day — you won’t know what worked
Handoff document (30 minutes, saves months)
Write a one-pager: login method, conversion definitions, geo rules, brand guidelines, negative list source, and who approves budget changes. When staff turn over — common in Dubai — the account survives.
What “done” looks like
You can answer yes to:
- AED + GST timezone correct
- At least one business conversion tested end-to-end
- Campaign naming readable
- Geo matches service area
- Ads match landing pages
- Negatives seeded
- Recommendations auto-apply not freely rewriting your strategy
Then — and only then — scale budget. Setup quality is the cheapest CPC reduction you’ll ever buy.
Access and succession checklist
- Business-owned Google login or proper admin transfer plan
- Two people with admin rights
- MCC link if agency-assisted
- Written conversion definitions in the shared drive
- Billing contact that is not a single personal card only
Dubai teams churn. Accounts without succession become ransom notes.
