Google Search Console: Setup and Weekly Routine
Set up Google Search Console correctly and run a weekly UAE SEO routine that catches query shifts, index errors, and ranking drops before they hurt.
Google Search Console (GSC) is the only free channel where Google tells you how your site appears in Search: queries, pages, index issues, and experience problems. Many Dubai SMEs either never verify a property or check it once after a developer “sets SEO.” This guide covers correct setup and a weekly routine that takes about 30 minutes—so SEO decisions stop being pure vibes.
Why GSC matters more than another rank-tracking login
Rank trackers estimate positions. GSC shows what Google actually served and whether users clicked. It also surfaces:
- Indexation failures on money pages
- Spike or collapse in impressions after a deploy
- Queries you rank for but never wrote a page for
- Core Web Vitals field issues by template
- Manual actions and security issues (rare, critical)
If an agency reports rankings without GSC access, you are flying partial-blind.
Setup: do it once, properly
1) Prefer a Domain property
Verify the domain property (DNS TXT) so you cover https, http, www, and non-www in one place. URL-prefix properties are fine as extras but miss siblings.
Who owns DNS? Free-zone setups often split IT, marketing, and a freelancing developer. Assign a named owner; document the TXT record.
2) Users and permissions
- Owner: internal accountable person
- Full users: SEO lead / agency
- Restricted: freelancers who only need reports
Remove ex-agencies. Access lingering for years is a quiet risk.
3) Connect the rest of the stack
- Submit XML sitemaps (EN and AR if separate)
- Link GA4 association for easier analysis
- Verify important subdomains separately if they host distinct products
4) Establish a clean baseline
Export last 3–6 months of Performance data (if available) before major site changes. Screenshot index coverage summary. You will want receipts after migrations.
5) Brand vs non-brand thinking
Create a simple saved filter habit: queries containing your brand name vs not. Non-brand is where SEO work should show up.
The 30-minute weekly routine
Run it the same day each week (Sunday evening or Thursday—pick your ops rhythm).
Minutes 0–5: Alerts and emergencies
- Check email alerts from GSC
- Manual actions / security issues
- Sudden plunge in total clicks week-over-week (compare 7 days vs previous 7, and 28 vs 28 to reduce noise)
If clicks fell off a cliff after a deploy, stop creating content and inspect indexation + robots.
Minutes 5–15: Performance triage
Open Performance → Search results:
- Queries: sort by clicks; scan opportunities with high impressions + low CTR (title/meta rewrite candidates).
- Pages: which URLs gained/lost clicks?
- Countries: confirm UAE dominance if that is your market; investigate accidental international index oddities.
- Devices: mobile share should not surprise you—if desktop-only engagement is high for a local service, your mobile UX may be broken.
Tag three actions max in a shared doc: rewrite title, fix page, investigate loss.
Minutes 15–22: Indexing and experience
- Pages → why pages aren’t indexed: look for spikes in “crawled – not indexed,” “duplicate,” “soft 404”
- Sitemaps: any processing errors?
- Core Web Vitals: new poor URL groups?
- HTTPS / site settings sanity
Minutes 22–28: Opportunity capture
Export or note:
- Queries with position ~5–15 and rising impressions (strengthen pages)
- Brand misspellings (decide if you care)
- Emerging Arabic queries if you only maintain English
Minutes 28–30: Assign owners
Every finding needs a name and a due date. Unowned SEO notes are diary entries, not operations.
Monthly add-ons (45 extra minutes)
- Compare branded vs non-branded clicks
- Review top landing pages against conversion data (WhatsApp, calls, purchases)
- Export links report samples; look for toxic junk patterns if you bought bad links historically
- Reconcile GSC pages with your CMS: orphaned live URLs?
Reading UAE-specific patterns
Seasonality: Ramadan, school holidays, and summer reshape queries. Do not panic-optimise a normal seasonal dip without multi-year context.
Bilingual: If Arabic pages exist, filter page URLs containing /ar/ (or your pattern) weekly. Arabic demand can rise without English moving.
Local pack interplay: GSC website clicks can fall while calls from Maps rise. Pair weekly GSC with GBP insights for local businesses.
Illustrative scenario: a clinic sees GSC clicks flat while appointments rise—GBP and WhatsApp ads drove demand; organic titles still need CTR work. Without multi-channel reading, someone “fixes SEO” that was not broken.
What to put in a simple scorecard (for owners)
| Metric | Why |
|---|---|
| Non-brand clicks (28d) | True SEO demand capture |
| Top 10 money page clicks | Are commercial URLs working? |
| Index errors on priority URLs | Technical risk |
| CTR on top 5 impression queries | Snippet quality |
| Conversions from organic (from analytics/CRM) | Business truth |
Rank alone is not a KPI. Qualified leads and revenue in AED are.
Common setup mistakes
- Verifying only
wwwwhile ads land on bare domain - Submitting a sitemap full of redirects
- Giving an agency Owner rights forever without offboarding
- Ignoring GSC while paying for “monthly SEO reports” that are rank screenshots
GSC anti-patterns
- Do not refresh Performance hourly—noise will make you manic.
- Do not request indexing for hundreds of junk URLs daily.
- Do not treat average position as a precise science; use it directionally.
- Do not delete properties in a fit of reorganisation without exporting history.
Handoff checklist for agencies
- Domain property verified; list of users exported
- Sitemaps submitted and green
- Shared weekly scorecard template
- Access to GA4 + call/WhatsApp conversion data
- Changelog of site deploys
Search Console is not optional infrastructure. Set it up like you set up corporate banking: carefully, with owners, and reviewed on a cadence. The rest of SEO execution becomes measurable instead of mythical.
Sharing GSC without losing ownership
Agencies need access; you need permanence. Keep at least two internal full owners on the domain property. When contracts end, remove users the same week you revoke ad accounts. Export monthly Performance CSVs to your Drive so history survives tool churn.
If your developer “holds SEO,” still verify marketing can see queries. Otherwise content briefs invent keywords customers never type—and Arabic opportunities stay invisible.
