Creative Specs for Snap Ads That Work

Vertical specs, safe zones, hooks, and production rules for Snap ads that hold GCC attention — phone-first, not TV cropped.

Snapchat invents new placement names; users do not invent new patience. This guide is the creative operating standard for UAE brands: dimensions, pacing, text, sound, and production workflows that fit real SME budgets.

Non-negotiables (read before the shoot)

  1. 9:16 vertical — design for full phone, not “we’ll crop later.”
  2. Hook in under 2 seconds — motion, face, food, price, or location reveal.
  3. Captions on — sound-off is common in malls, metros, and offices.
  4. Offer readable at arm’s length — if you squint on a phone preview, it fails.
  5. UI safe zones — keep logos, prices, and faces out of bottom chrome and edge gutters.

Exact pixel specs change; build masters at 1080×1920 and leave ~250–300px clear at the bottom for buttons/captions depending on placement. Always preview in Ads Manager before spend.

Anatomy of a high-performing Snap ad (6–12 seconds)

SecondJobExample (F&B)
0–2InterruptCheese pull / sizzle / door open to packed room
2–5Orient“Marina · open till 1am”
5–9Offer“Weekday set AED 79”
9–12CTA“WhatsApp to reserve · code MARINA”

For ecommerce: product in use first, not packaging on white. For education: student outcome first, campus beauty second. For apps: the screen that makes the app make sense, not the splash logo.

Text and bilingual layout

GCC feeds are bilingual. Practical rules:

  • One language leads per asset; second language as short support, not dual paragraphs fighting.
  • Arabic typography needs more line height — do not smash Nastaliq-style fonts into tiny boxes.
  • Prefer bold sans for numbers (AED 149) so they pop.
  • Maximum ~12 words on screen at once for prospecting.

Bad: English paragraph + Arabic paragraph + logo + hashtags + URL all at once. Good: one line Arabic hook, one line AED offer, end card with WhatsApp.

Sound design

  • Music beds are fine; voice clarity matters more for offers.
  • Avoid copyright surprises — use platform commercial libraries or licensed tracks.
  • Local dialect voiceovers (Khaleeji, Levantine, Egyptian) change reception; match audience, do not default to generic MSA for a street brand unless intentional.

Production tiers (AED, illustrative)

Creator day8–15 raw snaps, usage rightsAED 800–4,000+ depending on creator
Micro crewLighting, 2 looks, editAED 3,000–12,000 per batch
Full productionOverkill for most prospectingAED 15,000+ — save for hero launches

Most Snap winners in the UAE look like someone’s camera roll, not a hotel brand film. Spend on volume of hooks, not one perfect 30-second masterpiece.

Edit checklist before upload

  • First frame works as a freeze (no black open)
  • No tiny disclaimers as the only legal cover for a wild claim
  • End card holds 1 second so CTA is readable
  • File not overcompressed into mush
  • Brand colours consistent but not corporate-stiff
  • No horizontal bars
  • Faces not cut by stickers/UI in preview

Placement-aware thinking

Stories-style interstitial ads punish slow intros. Collection and product-set formats need clear hero images plus short clips. Lenses and AR are powerful for big brands and events — SMEs should master simple single-video ads before AR vanity.

If you run creator content as ads (Spark-like / partnership ads depending on product availability in your account), keep the creator’s native style; polishing it into a TV cut usually kills performance.

Illustrative scenario: mobile accessories store, Deira + online

Product: MagSafe chargers and cases.

Losing creative: tabletop spin of packaging, English only, 20 seconds, logo first. Winning pattern:

  1. Hand drops phone → case snap sound (0–2s)
  2. “AED 49 today · same-day Dubai delivery” (2–6s)
  3. Customer UGC unboxing 1s cutaways (6–9s)
  4. CTA swipe to WhatsApp catalogue (9–12s)

Batch: 6 hooks × 2 languages = 12 ads from one afternoon shoot. Test at AED 60–90/day per language set until CTR stabilises, then consolidate.

Common creative failures in the UAE

  • Stock “diverse team smiling in glass office” for a shawarma brand
  • Price hidden because “we’re premium” (premium still needs an entry path)
  • 9:16 export of a 16:9 film with huge black bars
  • Tiny Arabic subtitles burned in at 20px
  • Influencer content re-posted without reframing the first 1 second for cold audiences
  • Legal text replacing the offer (“*T&Cs apply” as the hero line)

Testing system (not random chaos)

Always change one variable per test cluster:

  1. Hook visual
  2. Offer framing (price vs freebie vs urgency)
  3. Language lead (AR vs EN)
  4. CTA type (WhatsApp vs site vs code)

Run each variant to a minimum spend floor (e.g. AED 250–400) before calling a loser, unless delivery is broken or policy-rejected.

Handoff template for freelancers

Send editors:

  • Offer one-liner + AED
  • Audience (age, city cluster, language)
  • 3 reference snaps (not Nike films)
  • Mandatory end card layout
  • Do-not-use list (stock clichés, banned claims)
  • Delivery: 1080×1920, captions burned or sidecar per your workflow

Key takeaways

  • Specs are table stakes; hooks and offers win auctions.
  • Shoot vertical natively; captions and bilingual discipline are not optional in the UAE.
  • Prefer many cheap variants over one expensive anthem.
  • Preview safe zones; design for one-handed viewing.
  • Build a testing cadence or creative will rot while you “optimise targeting.”

Storyboard templates you can copy today

Template A — Price shock (ecommerce)

  1. Product in use (0–2s)
  2. Old vs new price or bundle value (2–5s)
  3. Delivery promise Dubai/UAE (5–8s)
  4. CTA swipe (8–11s)

Template B — Place hunger (F&B)

  1. Extreme close-up food motion (0–2s)
  2. Pull back to venue + neighbourhood text (2–5s)
  3. Tonight-only line (5–8s)
  4. Map/WhatsApp CTA (8–12s)

Template C — Face proof (beauty/clinic — compliant)

  1. Real client reaction (consented) (0–2s)
  2. Process flash (2–6s)
  3. Honest caveat + booking CTA (6–12s)

Template D — App aha

  1. Finger on screen doing the magic action (0–3s)
  2. Result state (3–7s)
  3. Install CTA (7–10s)

Film all four templates in one half-day with wardrobe/product ready. Editing is where most SMEs lose days — pre-write end cards.

QA gate for every upload

Run this 60-second mute test on a mid-range Android:

  • Can you understand the offer with sound off?
  • Is the first frame interesting frozen?
  • Does any critical text sit under where Snap UI usually lives?
  • Is the final CTA held long enough to read?

If any answer is no, do not spend.

Example: 20260803_marina_set79_cheesepull_ar_v2.mp4

Store winners in a /winners folder with a one-line note: hook, CTR, cost per result. Six months later you will thank yourself when a new editor joins mid-Ramadan panic.
