Measure Video Campaigns Properly

Measure Snap and YouTube campaigns in the UAE: KPIs by objective, UTMs, WhatsApp, view-through traps, and a weekly scorecard.

Video is easy to celebrate and hard to measure. Platforms will happily show you view counts while your WhatsApp is quiet. This guide installs a measurement system for Snapchat and YouTube that a Dubai operator can run without a data science team.

Define the decision you want to make

Measurement exists to answer:

  • Scale, cut, or creative-refresh?
  • Which platform deserves next AED?
  • Is this brand-building or performance theatre?

If you cannot name the decision, you will drown in metrics.

KPI stack by objective

ObjectivePrimarySecondaryGuardrails
Reach / brandCost per 15s view / completed viewReach, frequencyBrand searches (directional)
TrafficCost per landingCTR, bounce/timeSpam click rate
LeadsCost per qualified leadForm→WhatsApp rateSpeed-to-lead
PurchasesCPA / ROASAOV, refund rateMargin after returns
StoreCost per visit codeRedemptionsCapacity
AppCPI + cost per activated userDay-1 retentionFraud

Qualified means your sales definition — suburb served, budget fit, human replied — not platform “lead.”

The UAE tracking stack (pragmatic)

  1. Platform pixels / tags — Snap pixel, Google tag
  2. GA4 — sessions, events, comparisons
  3. UTMs on every paid URL
  4. WhatsApp — unique links, pre-filled text codes, or dedicated numbers
  5. CRM / sheet — source, campaign, outcome, revenue
  6. Offline — codes, call tracking, POS notes

PDPL: collect what you need, state purpose, do not buy mystery lists.

Attribution reality check

Last-click will under-credit video. That does not mean you invent miracle ROAS.

Practical approach for SMEs:

  • Use platform reported conversions and CRM reality
  • Run geo or schedule holdouts when spend is material
  • Use unique offers for heavy video pushes
  • Track assisted paths qualitatively for high ticket (RE, auto)
  • For brand: survey “where did you hear about us?” on WhatsApp intake

Avoid “view-through conversion windows” so loose that a view last month claims today’s walk-in. Be explicit about windows (e.g. 1-day click / 7-day view) and keep them stable for comparisons.

View metrics that matter (and that do not)

Useful: hook rate (2s/3s), thruPlay/completed views, average view duration, earned attention relative to spend. Dangerous alone: raw views, “25% video views” without cost context, fan-subscribed vanity.

A cheap view of the wrong person is pollution.

Weekly scorecard (copy this)

Week of: ____
Spend Snap: AED __ | Spend YT: AED __
Creative winners/losers:
Cost per qualified lead/visit:
WhatsApp volume + reply SLA:
Frequency / fatigue notes:
Landing issues:
Decision next week: scale / hold / kill / reshoot

Thirty minutes, same time each week. No 40-slide theatre.

Platform nuances

Snapchat

  • Strong for swipe/CTR and app goals when events clean
  • Offline F&B needs codes
  • Creative fatigue shows up fast — watch frequency

YouTube

  • Separate paid vs organic reporting
  • Packaging CTR for discovery ads
  • TrueView-style metrics ≠ business metrics
  • Search lift directional via brand Google queries

Illustrative scenario: ecommerce beauty

  • Snap prospecting + YouTube remarketing
  • Primary KPI: CPA to delivered order
  • Secondary: cost per add-to-cart
  • Guardrail: return rate by creative type (if filters mislead, returns spike)
  • Weekly: kill any ad with CPA > 1.5× target after AED 400 spend

Common measurement scams and self-scams

  • Agencies showing only platform ROAS with view-through fairy dust
  • Counting every WhatsApp “hi” as a lead
  • Changing attribution windows until the graph looks good
  • Not excluding internal traffic during tests
  • Double-counting Snap and GA4 purchases as two sales

Incrementality lite (SME version)

When monthly video spend > ~AED 10k:

  • Pause video in one emirate/city cluster for 10–14 days or
  • Hold out 20% of remarketing audience
  • Compare conversion rates and revenue carefully

Not lab-perfect. Better than blind faith.

Key takeaways

  • Tie video KPIs to business decisions in AED.
  • Track chats, calls, codes — not only platform pixels.
  • Keep attribution windows honest and stable.
  • Run a weekly scorecard; retire vanity metrics.
  • Use light incrementality when spend is material.

UTM and naming examples

utm_source=snapchat
utm_medium=paid_social
utm_campaign=2026_08_marina_set79
utm_content=hook_cheesepull_v3

utm_source=youtube
utm_medium=paid_video
utm_campaign=2026_08_instream_pros
utm_content=15s_arabic_vo

Mirror names inside Snap Ads Manager and Google Ads. Reporting joins become possible.

WhatsApp qualification rubric (score leads)

ScoreMeaning
AIn area, ready timing, clear need
BNeed clear, timing soft
CResearch only
FSpam / wrong geo / abuse

Optimise toward A/B cost, not total chat volume. Train agents to tag in CRM or a sheet daily during tests.

Monthly board pack (one page)

  • Spend by platform
  • Qualified outcomes
  • Creative winners (screenshots)
  • Tracking incidents
  • Next month tests
  • Ask (budget change)

If it needs 30 slides, you are hiding.

Troubleshooting playbook

ObservationLikely causeAction
High views, low clicksWeak CTA / wrong objectiveReshoot end; change objective
High clicks, low chatsLanding frictionWhatsApp deep link; speed
High chats, low jobsQualification / opsScripts; geo tighten
Good CPA, bad marginDiscount too deepOffer redesign
Numbers disagreeTracking doublesAudit tags; dedupe CRM

Write the diagnosis in the weekly scorecard so you do not relearn it monthly.

Red team your dashboard

Once a month, ask a sceptical colleague:

  1. Which number would disappear if view-through were off?
  2. Which number would disappear if WhatsApp were slow?
  3. Which number is double-counted?
  4. What decision did we make last month from this dashboard?

If (4) is “none,” shrink the dashboard until it forces action.

Roles in a two-person measurement system

Media owner: platform metrics, creative fatigue, budget moves. Ops owner: lead quality tags, show-up rates, revenue.

Meet weekly for 20 minutes with both sheets open. Video fails when media celebrates while ops drowns — or when ops complains without sharing tags media can optimise against.

Spreadsheet columns that actually get used

Date | Platform | Campaign | Spend AED | Qual leads | Booked jobs | Revenue AED | Notes | Decision

If your sheet has 40 columns, nobody updates it. Ten honest columns beat a warehouse of vanity fields.
