Dashboards for Owners — Not Analysts
Build a one-screen UAE marketing dashboard owners actually open weekly: AED spend, qualified leads, booked jobs, and CAC—not forty vanity charts.
Dashboards for owners — not analysts
If a dashboard needs a 30-minute walkthrough every Monday, it is not an owner dashboard. It is a museum of charts. Owners of Dubai SMEs need one screen that answers: Are we making money from marketing this week, and what should we change before Friday?
Analysts can keep deep GA4 explorations. Founders bouncing between Business Bay meetings and warehouse visits cannot.
Design principle: decisions per pixel
Every widget must trigger one of:
- Spend more
- Spend less
- Fix ops (reply time, staffing, stock)
- Fix tracking
- Do nothing (stability is a valid decision)
If a chart has not changed a decision in 60 days, delete it. Sentimentality about “nice to have” visuals is how you end up with eighteen pages nobody opens.
The one-screen scorecard
Row 1 — Money
- Media spend (AED) this week and month-to-date
- Booked job value or marketing-influenced revenue (definition locked)
- Blended CAC
- Simple contribution: gross profit − media (even if approximate)
Row 2 — Pipeline
- Inquiries in (calls + WhatsApp + forms)
- Qualified rate
- Booked jobs or paid orders
- Median first response time on WhatsApp and phone
Row 3 — Channels (three to five lines max)
For each major channel: spend, primary outcomes, cost per outcome. Campaign-level detail lives elsewhere.
Row 4 — Health alerts
- Hours since last valid conversion event
- Spam / junk rate flag
- Broken landing URLs or zero-delivery campaigns
That is enough for a managing partner between site visits.
What “good” looks like in three UAE contexts
Trades (plumber, AC, fit-out): hero metric is cost per booked job, not cost per call. Show answer rate and jobs by community cluster (Marina/JLT vs “all Dubai”).
Clinics and beauty: cost per kept appointment, no-show %, and reply time. Lead volume without show-rate is theatre.
Ecommerce: new-customer CAC, contribution after returns/COD failure, and stockouts on hero SKUs. ROAS alone hides discount addiction.
Tools that are enough
| Stage | Tool | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Start | Google Sheet | Fast, honest, versionable |
| Next | Looker Studio on Sheets/GA4/Ads | Free sharing with clients/partners |
| Later | CRM dashboards | When CRM is truly source of truth |
| Avoid early | Heavy BI with no owner | Pretty shelfware |
Looker Studio hygiene:
- Timezone Asia/Dubai
- Currency formatting AED
- Default ranges: last 7 and 28 days
- Huge numbers on top, tables below
- Check the mobile layout — owners live on phones
Metrics to banish from the owner home screen
Impressions as a hero number, average session duration, bounce-rate theology, follower counts, engagement rate without revenue, and platform ROAS without CAC. Secondary pages can hold diagnostics. The home screen stays economic.
Definitions panel (tiny but sacred)
On the dashboard or a linked tab, spell out:
- What is a lead?
- What is qualified?
- What is booked?
- How marketing-influenced revenue is counted
- Whether figures are VAT-inclusive
Most number fights are definition fights wearing a chart costume.
Wiring data without a data team
- Spend: CSV or connectors from Google Ads, Meta, others
- Web outcomes: GA4 key events as directional signals
- Truth: CRM or sheet of won jobs with source and value
- Ops: reply-time sampling (even manual for 20 chats/week helps)
When sources disagree, CRM + bank deposits win. Show the discrepancy rather than papering it over. That habit builds trust faster than a perfect visualisation.
Weekly screenshot ritual
Every Monday (or Sunday night for Monday trading):
- Owner opens the scorecard (two minutes)
- Marketing explains three deltas only
- One decision is written in a decisions tab with owner name
- The agency PDF is optional homework, not the meeting
Pair this with the weekly metrics review agenda so the dashboard has a job to do.
Build order: two half-days
Half-day 1: lock definitions; create the sheet; enter two weeks of manual history so charts are not empty. Half-day 2: connect Looker; add channel table; add alert cells; share with view access.
Do not start by shopping enterprise BI. Empty sophistication is still empty.
Access, governance, and failure modes
- Owner, marketing lead, and finance get view access
- Agency edit rights stay limited
- When definitions change, version them with a date annotation
- Kill competing freelancers’ side dashboards — politics will invent multiple truths
Silent connector failures are common: schedule a monthly “does this still match Ads Manager spend?” check. Mixing UTC and Dubai timezones will also invent fake Ramadan patterns.
Expand later — not on day one
Only after the owner screen is habit, add secondary pages:
- Ecommerce funnel drop-offs
- Creative leaderboards
- Cohort LTV from CAC/LTV in AED
- Geo breakdowns of jobs
Secondary never replaces home.
Illustrative scenario
A multi-location clinic group stopped celebrating “Meta leads” when the owner screen forced kept appointments and no-show rate by branch. One location’s front desk was the real CAC problem. Media budgets stopped subsidising ops failure. That is what an owner dashboard is for: clarity with teeth.
Closing checklist
- One home screen, four rows max of meaning
- AED and Dubai timezone
- Definitions visible
- CRM truth over pixel vanity
- Weekly decision log
- No orphan charts
Build a cockpit, not an art gallery.
Sample owner questions your screen must answer in under a minute
- How much did we spend in AED this week, and is it on plan?
- How many qualified inquiries did we get, not total form dumps?
- What did we book or sell, and at what cost per outcome?
- Is response time helping or destroying paid media?
- Did tracking break?
If your dashboard cannot answer those five without a side quest into Ads Manager, keep cutting widgets until it can. Owners do not need another colour palette; they need a decision surface.
Also link economics clearly: the CAC tile should match the methodology in CAC, LTV, and payback in AED, and offline chat/call wins should flow from your import process — otherwise the pretty numbers are still theatre.
