Google Business Profile Setup Checklist

Claim, verify, and fully complete your Dubai Google Business Profile: categories, map pin, hours, services, photos, and WhatsApp messaging paths.

A half-finished Google Business Profile (GBP) is worse than almost any other half-finished marketing asset. Searchers decide in seconds: wrong hours, no photos, stock logo, and a category that says "Business Service" when you are a dental clinic — and they call the listing next door.

This is a setup checklist, not a ranking theory piece. Work top to bottom. Tick only what is true. When you finish, your listing should be complete enough that a stranger in Business Bay or Marina can trust you enough to call or WhatsApp.

For strategy context, start at Local SEO for Dubai: Start Here. For ranking mechanics, use How Google Maps Rankings Work.

Before you create anything

Decide your listing model

  • Public storefront — customers walk in (café, salon, showroom, clinic reception). Show the address and place the pin on the door.
  • Service-area business (SAB) — you go to them (plumber, AC tech, pest control). Hide the address; define service areas. Do not invent a Marina shopfront if you only have a desk in Al Quoz. Details: Service-Area Businesses Without a Shopfront.
  • Multi-location — separate profile per real location. Never one profile "covering" Dubai and Abu Dhabi. See Multi-Location Businesses and Franchises.

Gather these assets first

  • Trade license name and brand name (know which you will use publicly)
  • Exact address as on Ejari / lease / free-zone certificate
  • Primary phone in international format: +971 4 … or +971 5…
  • Website URL (HTTPS) and preferred WhatsApp number
  • Logo (square) + cover image (real exterior or interior)
  • 15–40 job/store photos already on the phone
  • List of services with approximate AED ranges you are willing to publish
  • Opening hours including Friday and public-holiday patterns
  • Owner Google account (business email preferred; not a random personal Gmail shared with five staff forever)

Step 1 — Search before you create

  1. Search Google Maps for your exact business name and phone.
  2. Search the address and nearby competitors.
  3. If a listing already exists (from Google, customers, or an old agency), claim it instead of creating a duplicate.
  4. If you find duplicates, plan a merge/report process after you own the correct one. Duplicates split reviews and confuse rankings.

Step 2 — Create or claim and verify

  1. Go through Google Business Profile / Maps "Add your business".
  2. Enter the customer-facing name — no keyword stuffing (Best AC Repair Dubai Marina Near Me). Match signage and website header.
  3. Choose primary category carefully (next section). You can refine later, but start honest.
  4. Complete verification: postcard, phone, email, or video — whatever Google offers for your case.
  5. Store verification proof (photos of postcards, codes) in a shared drive. When staff leave, you still own the listing.

UAE note: free-zone addresses, multi-tenant towers, and "Office 1204, Cluster X" formats often need a precise pin plus suite details in the address line. Ground-floor F&B is easier to verify than a shared desk.

Step 3 — Primary category (do not skip)

Primary category is the strongest relevance signal on the listing.

Examples that matter in Dubai:

BusinessStrong primaryWeak / lazy
Emergency plumberPlumberContractor
Curtain showroomCurtain store / Interior decorator (pick closest true fit)Shopping centre
Dental clinicDentist / Dental clinicMedical clinic (too broad if possible)
Specialty caféCafeRestaurant (if you are truly café-first)

Add secondary categories only for services you actually deliver. Category deep dive: Categories and Services on Your GBP.

Step 4 — Address, pin, service areas

Storefront

  1. Enter building name, street, community, city, emirate.
  2. Drag the pin to the entrance customers use, not the car park of the neighbouring tower.
  3. Walk the pin on mobile Maps as a customer would. If Uber would drop off at the wrong lobby, fix it.

SAB

  1. Enable service-area mode; hide street address if customers never visit.
  2. Add service areas you truly cover (e.g. Dubai Marina, JBR, JLT, Palm — not "United Arab Emirates" as a flex).
  3. Keep coverage honest. Inflated maps look good to owners and bad to algorithms and customers.

Step 5 — Contact and conversion paths

  1. Phone: the number staff actually answer during listed hours.
  2. Website: homepage or location page that matches NAP.
  3. Appointment / messaging: enable chat or WhatsApp options Google surfaces when available for your account.
  4. Booking links only if the calendar is real (no dead Calendly links from 2023).

Test every button on a phone that is not logged into your Google account.

Step 6 — Hours and special hours

  1. Set regular hours accurately — including Friday and Saturday realities in the UAE.
  2. Add special hours for UAE National Day, Eid, Ramadan adjustments, and summer reduced hours before the day, not after angry reviews.
  3. If you are 24/7 emergency, say so; if you are 9–6, do not claim 24/7 for pack clicks you cannot fulfil.

Step 7 — Description and attributes

Write a 750-character-or-under description that:

  • States who you serve and where (Marina, citywide, Business Bay walk-ins)
  • Names main services without keyword spam
  • Mentions languages (English / Arabic) if true
  • Avoids ALL CAPS and prize claims Google may flag

Fill attributes: women-owned, wheelchair accessible, free Wi-Fi, onsite parking, outdoor seating — only if accurate. False attributes create bad reviews.

Step 8 — Services and products

  1. Add services that match how people search (blocked drain, Invisalign consultation, blackout curtains).
  2. Add short descriptions and from AED X when you have a floor price.
  3. For retail/showrooms, add products with photos and price ranges.
  4. Align service names with website headings so relevance is consistent.

Minimum viable set on day one:

  • Logo
  • Cover (storefront or signature interior)
  • Exterior with readable signage
  • Interior / team
  • 10+ work samples or menu/food shots

Refresh monthly. Photo playbook: Photos, Posts, and Products That Win Maps.

Step 10 — Q&A, posts, and review readiness

  1. Seed Q&A with real questions you already get (Do you free-quote via WhatsApp?, Parking in the building?, Do you cover Palm Jumeirah?). Answer as the owner.
  2. Publish first GBP post: current offer or "now open" with a photo.
  3. Prepare a review link / QR for staff. Do not ask for five stars as a condition of service. Review engine: Get and Respond to Google Reviews in the UAE.

Step 11 — Users and access control

  1. Add owners and managers deliberately.
  2. Remove ex-agencies and ex-staff the week they leave.
  3. Prefer a company-owned Google account as primary owner with 2FA.
  4. Document who can edit categories and name — those two fields are high-risk.

Step 12 — Cross-check NAP and go live

Final pass:

  • Name matches website header and invoices (or intentional brand vs legal difference is documented)
  • Address string matches contact page
  • Phone matches WhatsApp Business profile if you promote the same number
  • Pin opens correct entrance
  • Categories true
  • Hours true this week
  • Photos not stock skylines
  • No second unverified duplicate still floating
  • Call button works; site loads on 4G

Then put the listing into your monthly 30-minute routine.

Common setup failures in the UAE

  1. Tower confusion — pin on Tower A, shop in Tower B podium.
  2. Shared phone — three brands, one Etisalat number; Google and customers cannot tell who is who.
  3. Agency ownership — agency creates listing under their login; you lose access after a dispute.
  4. Arabic ignored — English-only description when half your callers prefer Arabic UI.
  5. Category greed — 10 secondary categories, none of them accurate.

Done definition

You are "set up" when a cold searcher can answer: What do you do? Where are you? Are you open? Can I trust you? How do I contact you? without opening your website. Everything after that — reviews, posts, citations, location pages — is fuel. Setup is the engine.
