Keyword Research in English and Arabic (UAE)

Build a bilingual UAE keyword map in English, Arabic, and mixed search—prioritised by purchase intent and AED value, not empty vanity volume.

Keyword research in the UAE fails when teams export a US English list, sprinkle “Dubai” on the end, and call it localisation. Buyers here search in English, Arabic, and messy hybrids. Volume tools undercount Arabic and neighbourhood modifiers. Your job is to build a map of money language, then assign one primary page per intent cluster—not a spreadsheet nobody implements.

Start from revenue, not from a keyword tool

Write down offers and margins first:

  • Emergency AC repair vs annual maintenance contracts
  • Walk-in café covers vs catering for Business Bay offices
  • Cosmetic dentistry packages vs general checkups
  • Dropshipped SKUs vs high-margin curated bundles

High volume with zero margin is a trap. A query with modest reported volume that books AED 4,000 jobs can beat a high-volume informational term that only burns writer hours and hosting ink.

Collect seeds in three languages of reality

English seeds

Service + city/area: “plumber Business Bay”, “wedding florist Dubai”, “ERP implementation UAE”, “office deep clean DIFC”.

Arabic seeds

Native phrasing, not word-for-word translation. Work with a native speaker or bilingual staff—not only machine translation. Real query shapes you should seed and SERP-check:

  • شركة تنظيف دبي (cleaning company Dubai)
  • عيادة أسنان جميرا (dental clinic Jumeirah)
  • صيانة تكييف دبي مارينا (AC maintenance Dubai Marina)
  • أفضل مطعم إفطار رمضاني دبي (best Ramadan iftar restaurant Dubai)
  • ستائر بيزنس باي أسعار (Business Bay curtains prices)
  • حجز موعد عيادة جلدية أبوظبي (book dermatology appointment Abu Dhabi)

Transliteration and fringe

People type Arabic words in Latin script, mix brands, and use local abbreviations: “DEWA approved contractor”, “NOC typing Dubai”, “typing centre near me”, brand slang that only locals know.

Pull seeds from:

  • Google Autocomplete and People Also Ask with UAE locale settings
  • Search Console queries (the gold standard for your real language)
  • Sales WhatsApp chats and call notes
  • Competitor title tags, menus, and service grids
  • Classifieds and marketplace category names for vernacular

Cluster by intent, not by synonym

Group keywords that deserve the same page:

  • Cluster A: “AC repair Dubai Marina”, “aircon repair Marina”, “AC not cooling Marina” → one strong service page (plus GBP)
  • Cluster B: “how to clean AC filters” → educational article that links to service
  • Cluster C: “AC installation cost UAE” → commercial guide with honest AED ranges

Do not build separate URLs for every synonym. That creates cannibalisation and thin content.

Prioritise with a simple score

Score each cluster 1–5 on:

  1. Business value (margin, close rate, average order value)
  2. Intent closeness to purchase or booking
  3. Ability to win in 6–12 months given competition and your proof assets
  4. Operational fit (can you serve that area or SLA without burning the team?)

Sort descending. Your first quarter roadmap is the top clusters only—usually far fewer than founders expect.

Tools: use them, do not worship them

Useful: Google Keyword Planner (UAE geo), Search Console, autocomplete, Ahrefs or Semrush, SERP mining, Google Trends filtered to UAE.

Limitations you must accept:

  • Arabic volumes are often thin, lumpy, or missing
  • Neighbourhood modifiers look like “zero volume” yet convert
  • Tools lag new compounds, free-zone jargon, and seasonal slang

When tools say zero, trust sales conversations and whether a real SERP with ads and local results exists. Demand can be real even when dashboards look empty.

Map keywords to URL architecture

Example for a multi-service trade business:

  • /ac-repair-dubai/ — primary city-level service
  • /ac-repair-dubai/marina-jlt/ — only if unique content and real capacity
  • /blog/ac-maintenance-summer-uae/ — informational support
  • Arabic equivalents under /ar/... with proper hreflang

Avoid relying solely on ?lang=ar toggles if you care about durable Arabic SEO. Prefer clear URL patterns humans can share on WhatsApp.

Bilingual research workflow you can finish in half a day

  1. Export Search Console queries for three months; tag language roughly (EN / AR / mixed).
  2. Interview one salesperson or owner for 20 minutes: “What do people type or say on the phone?”
  3. Build English clusters; have an Arabic-native produce parallel clusters (not a blind translation of every English row).
  4. SERP-check the top 15 clusters from a Dubai perspective—note Maps vs organic vs ads.
  5. Assign primary URL + status: exists / rewrite / new.
  6. Define secondary terms each page should cover naturally in headings and FAQs.

Seasonal keyword layers without spam

Add calendar modifiers thoughtfully:

  • Ramadan, iftar, suhoor (F&B, gifts, delivery windows)
  • Peak summer AC emergency language
  • School-term cleaning, tutoring, after-school logistics
  • DSF, White Friday, mid-year sale ecommerce terms
  • UAE National Day gifting and hospitality

Create temporary landing sections or update existing pages—do not leave “Ramadan 2024” titles rotting into the next decade.

Negative keywords for organic thinking

Organic has no “negatives” button, but you still decide what not to chase:

  • Job-seeker queries if you sell the service (“plumber salary Dubai”)
  • DIY and free tutorial intent if you cannot monetise it
  • Other emirates you cannot serve profitably
  • Competitor brand terms as your primary growth plan (legal and quality risk)

Deliverable checklist

  • One living spreadsheet: cluster, language, primary keyword, secondaries, URL, intent, priority, owner
  • Top 10 clusters approved by someone who understands margins in AED
  • Arabic reviewed by a human who actually uses the language daily
  • SERP screenshots stored for top clusters
  • Content brief template ready for the first three pages
  • Measurement plan: which conversions prove a cluster is working (call, WhatsApp, form, purchase)

Keyword research mistakes to avoid

  • Do not stuff Arabic keywords into English paragraphs to “cover both.”
  • Do not buy a “10,000 keyword spreadsheet” from a freelancing marketplace and implement all of it.
  • Do not treat Keyword Planner volume as a budget authority—pair it with CRM reality.
  • Do not skip re-research after Ramadan or a major site migration; language and SERPs shift.

Keyword research only pays when it becomes pages, internal links, and weekly review. Next, turn clusters into on-page execution and neighbourhood intent where local modifiers truly matter for your service radius.
